One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

I didn’t get very far yesterday, because I couldn’t start typing until it was almost bedtime. And then it was … bedtime, so it was lights out. Okay, so that wasn’t the best explanation in the world, but at least I tried. That counts for something, nicht wahr?

And now it appears that I can’t type a journal right now anyway, because we’re off to watch Ben and Joe swim. Because I don’t exactly feel like swimming right now. Now I just have to remember what to write about. Ha! Like I will. Although, now that I think about it, I did have most of the ideas in my head while I was waiting for sleep to come.

It was kind of sad seeing Daysie off yesterday when Mary took her for our vacation. It took a little convincing on my part to actually get her into the car. She kept trotting forward, and then turning around to look at me, refusing to listen to Mary. Hmm … she’ll be having some fun this week, I guess. Nah, Daysie’s a good girl most of the time. Especially for me. ‘Cause I’m special.

Yesterday was a day full of car ride. It started out fine, since we planned on going to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and we figured we’d only be in the car for three hours. Not so bad considering we’ve done the exact same thing for the past couple days. But somewhere we missed our turn and that lengthened our trip considerably. Oh yeah, Michigan isn’t too big.

By the time we got to the Dunes, it started raining. It was an hour and a half later than we wanted to be there, and when we finally did arrive, it flippin’ started raining. And it didn’t stop raining until we were out of Empire City. And it was windier than windy. When we visited the Dune, the wind almost blew us over. And the Dune certainly was impressive. It was quite larger than I thought it would be, but expected such a thing. I wanted to go down the sand to make my way up again—kind of like field hockey conditioning, I kept telling myself—but the weather was so poor there wasn’t a chance that I would be able to do such a thing. I got a few cool pictures, though. But my camera won’t do the Dune justice.

Then we were in the car again. For quite a while. A few hours later, and a dinner later, we arrived at Mackinaw City. Our hotel room turned out to be quite spacious, but everything else about the hotel is kind of slummy. We get a view of Mackinac Island and some of the ferries heading off to there, but we also get a nice, beautiful view of a load of spiders. Spiders and mosquitoes are everywhere. And we just went down to the pool while Dad took a shower, and the water was rather disgusting as well.

I don’t know if I ever mentioned it before, but Doe-Eye had bunnies when she wasn’t supposed to. When I bought her, she was pregnant. She had a litter of seven, but all of them died except for Nebelstreif. Dana loved how soft Nebelstreif was, and so when I posted an “ad” on Facebook, she commented about her. I thought it was kind of funny. But I also posted an ad on Craigslist, but just before we went off to Grandma Gordon’s, I got an email that my ad had been flagged for removal. Confused, I checked out my ad, and it was no longer my ad. Someone had changed it to advertise something completely different.

So I have absolutely no idea about what happened there, but I was rather ticked off. Now I don’t know what to do about it. We’re on vacation, so I can’t even think of posting another advertisement for her yet. I guess I can show her at the Chelsea fair and hope to sell her there. Or, if I sell her mother, I can possibly keep her, because she has better conformation and she has a much nicer personality.

I recently discovered that anyone can show animals at the Chelsea fair, which I found fantastic. None of my rabbits are really fit to show. Midget’s too fast, Cashmere has a coat that isn’t acceptable, Doe-Eye’s temperament is way too shy and Nebelstreif should be sold (but I suppose she’d be the best one to show). But I’m going to tattoo DEB and show her anyway. I bred her to Cashmere, so she should be having a litter of bunnies, and I’ll show her as a doe with bunnies. Then I’ll try to sell the bunnies and her at the fair. I’d get the most money for bunnies there, most likely. Although they’ll all be castor color.

Since I hope on selling DEB and most likely Nebelstreif as well, I was wondering whether or not I’d like to continue raising mini-rexes, or switch to standard rexes. They’re both unbelievably soft, since they have the same coat, standard rexes are just about twice as big. Which means that if I do butcher rabbits, I’d get more meat and have a larger coat to tan. And when I look for rexes on Craigslist, most of what I see is actually rexes and not mini-rexes.

I don’t know.

I do know that I want to breed castor, lynx and/or opal coat colors. They’re all agouti patterns. And they’re all very pretty color, though I must say that lynx is the most pretty. Look ‘em up. The only problem that I see with those coat colors, however, is that agouti patterns are a wee bit tricky. You have not one color to worry about, but two different bands of color. Castor, I know, needs to have a 50-50 band.

Although, I also absolutely love the tri-colored rabbits. Except with tri-colors, it’ll probably be easier to work with the brown and black, but you need 50-50 color and white with the broken pattern. All of this is according to NRBA, of course. But that’s how the shows work.

Thing with rabbit breeding and showing, though, is that I’m not sure whether or not I’ll be able to do it when I go off to college. It’ll be a little challenging, I suppose. I just know that when I get the chance later on in life, I’ll jump on it. I love my rabbits. Other people can have their horses and dogs. Me likes the rabbits.

Well, bed time now (how time flies when the writing isn’t written in one sitting). Guess I’ll write about today’s adventures tomorrow.
