English forensics . . . a class I currently have. With Marsh again. This class I'll actually like, though. I mean, I get to memorize things . . . OTEP's Adrenochrome Dreams will be one of those things. *shiver* Such a weird, weird song.
Anyway, I just wanted to write a variation of my halfway improved opening speech. *shrug* Dunno why, exactly.
"How many people would like to call themselves a nerd? Well, a couple years ago I ran around with a group of friends who called themselves the Nerd Herd. But now I realize, I'm not a nerd; I'm a geek. See, the difference between a nerd and a geek is that a nerd concentrates more on the academic subjects. They get good grades and tend to have the really smart jobs. They're also pretty anti-social. Geeks, on the other hand, are more interested in the fandoms and subjects that don't really matter. They get average grades.
"So I'll talk about my geekdom, my present and my future. Yay, right?
"My fandom is the X-Men. About a year ago, now, I was bored and flipping through channels on the TV, and I saw this show called Wolverine and the X-Men. I was kind of interested, wanted to know who the X-Men were, so I watched it. And this one character, he was teleporting around so that I couldn't see him, but when he stood still and started speaking, he had a German accent! I love German. It's an awesome language. I've been learning it since Freshman year. So when I heard his accent, I knew I had to know more about him. So I continued watching the show, found other things X-Men related, and eventually got into the comic books. Now I know tons about the X-Men and have expanded my love towards comic books to all of MARVEL.
"Comic books aren't the only thing I do, though. I also watch some TV shows, like Dexter and Prison Break. Great shows. I've been caught up in my homework a lot lately, too. But a couple months ago, I got into field hockey. It was the first sport I ever played. And it was the first time I actually felt like I belonged. See, most of the time, in school, when we're supposed to get in groups and pairs, I'm always the last person to be chosen. My friends go with each other before me. So in field hockey, I actually had a team. I wasn't left out. It was great.
"I'm also looking more into my classes this year. I'm going to go talk to my councilor to talk about forensics. Not this class forensics, but forensic science. When I graduate and go to college, I want to go for forensics. I have to figure out which classes I need to take in high school, figure out which college to go to, and all of that.
"I went over to my aunt's this weekend, and before I was thinking I'd get into the art career. But I never knew what I was going to do. Everything felt a little iffy. But then I was talking to my aunt, and somehow the subject of science came up, and I expressed how I love science. And my aunt asked me why I didn't get into science for my career. And I was like, I dunno. But then forensics came up and I was like, huh. Y'know, that actually might work. So I looked into it a little more and the more I did, the more I felt comfortable with it. So forensics is what I want to do.
"Right now, my focus is on my present and my future. What I do at home, and what I plan to do later. Maybe I'm a geek now, but later I might become a nerd. But people are people. And people tend to name everything--just because they can. I am who I am. I don't need a label. But right now, I'm proud of being a geek."
Every time I recite this, it changes, but that's the jist of what I said in class. Had a speech a couple seconds short of four minutes. So far, it's been the longest speech by far. I mean, the required length was two to three minutes. :) I'm an over-achiever. I just need to keep things that way.
